While not the highest-quality backpack you can find, this backpack is still well made, quite comfortable, and has a pleasantly low profile. If you're a student who needs to carry 4-5 bulky textbooks plus a laptop, look elsewhere. But otherwise this should fit the bill. I work from home and commute into New York City every 2-4 weeks, and have been experimenting with different options for my laptop. The classic over-the-shoulder bag gets awkward and heavy while walking through subway stations and on the streets of New York. A laptop bag on wheels is really nice for pulling, but a bit too bulky to hold on your lap on the train or subway, tricky to keep close to you while walking in crowds or through revolving doors, and too heavy to comfortably carry up and down stairs. This backpack was absolutely perfect for my needs--very comfortable, fit a surprising amount of papers, books, accessories, iPod, etc... it had just enough pockets for everything I needed without adding undue bulk. Usually backpacks in a NYC subway earn you dirty looks because they stick out so far and are prone to bumping other people, but this one has a low-enough profile that it wasn't an issue. I did wonder about the style statement of wearing a backpack to one of the offices for a Wall Street firm (where I work), but it's black and has clean lines, and didn't seem at all out of place, which was quite nice. It's now my bag of choice, and I'm even debating over whether to start using it in airports as well (rather than the one on wheels). The only thing that vaguely bothered me about it was that there's a double zipper on the largest pouch only--all the other pockets had only a single head on the zipper, so you can only open it from one side... and can't do that trick where you switch the zipper to the other side in order to change who might be able to reach it if you happen to get distracted for a moment.
