Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Case Logic PDVK-10 7 to 10-Inch In-Car Portable DVD Player Case (Black)

Customer Review: sleek but limited carrying options
Summary: 4 Stars

I do like this product but and still debating whether it is going to meet my needs or not.
I bought this item to replace the bulky, non-dvd player tote bag that came with our borrowed (older and bulky) dvd player Magnavox MPD 850 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player with Bag and 2 Headphones. We were going to be traveling for Thanksgiving both by plane and by car with my 3-year-old son so we wanted both convenience and reduced bulk.
This case fits our player comfortably. So far, when mounted/suspended in the car, I have only used the player in the vertical/180 degrees configuration, not the tabletop/90 degrees set-up because I prefered to keep the player as far from my son's feet as possible. However, I do feel that adjustable strap holding the player to the case would hold our player securely in the tabletop set-up, since ours has a narrow, adjustable "neck" connecting screen to base. I am not sure if a player of uniform width would slide out or not. The base/disc portion of the player juts out unsupported in the tabletop setup. The strap holding it to the case is made of nylon webbing about 1/2" wide with a plastic puckle. You can adjust the length of the strap and can move it between two different height slots to accomodate your player.
I did have some trouble operating the dvd player when mounted vertically in the car and I was in the front seat because the buttons and remote control sensor are along the front edge of my player and, therefore, were covered by the lower lip of the case. The case is flexible enough that I could slide my finger in to hit the buttons but it was a little awkward and I sometimes had to guess which one I wanted. On the other hand, my son couldn't reach them either, so that was a plus.
The storage space is decent, ~1" D and the full HxW of case. I think the actual DVD cases are too bulky for any kind of travel, so I didn't even try them. My guess is that you could probably get 4 standard cases in there, but it would take all of the space. I don't like the cd wallets that just have "sleeves" because I don't want the discs to slide out and I like a hard-sided case. I use slim, individual clam-shell cases similiar toMaxell CD-355 Clam-Shell Assorted Colors, 20 Pack. I only had 3 handy so I packed all three, the dvd player's remote & owner's manual, directions sheet for the case, the car-mount straps plus the A/C power cord (car-adapter is lost) and some clunky kid-safe headphones (Philips SHK1035/27 Headband Headphone). The headphones and the wall-plug took some creative packing to make fit for transport and had to come out when we wanted to use the player, but it worked.
Car-Mounting:
This was fairly straight forward in my 2005 Toyota Highlander. There is one long strap with an adjustable loop at each end. these slide over the headrests and then you cinch the loops down so the strap is hanging taut between the seats. Unles your seats are really close together, the loop with not be cinched all the way around either headrest so start loosely and make it equidistant. I appreciated that the case attaches to the strap AFTER you have it connected to the car. It prevous cases I have tried, you clip the strap to the case and have to try to get it all arranged with the big case flopping in the way. This product has strong flap that folds over the suspension strap and secures back to the case with heavy duty velcro (~ 1.5x8"). Then you take the two remaining straps, loop them around the base of each front seat, clip to rings on bottom of case, and cinch down until taut. I did have trouble finding a good place to attach the strap to the base of my seats, but I was working in semi-darkness with a car full of travel paraphenalia. Overall, I felt like the case was securely attached to the car and the dvd player was securely attached to the case.
The two big reasons I am considering returning:
1) There is NO shoulder strap. There aren't even any metal rings on the top of the case to allow you to add your own strap. All you have is the carrying handle you see in the picture, nicely padded though it is. When traveling through the airport or from car to hotel with a preschooler and all your junk, that just isn't feasible. I ended up sticking the whole case inside a spacious backpack for part of the trip and then carrying the thing upside down with a spare shoulder strap from my luggage clipped to the metal rings on the bottom of the case.
2) I have not yet figured out a way that I can attach the case to the back of the front seat instead of suspended in the center. I don't think that is what it is designed for, but I think a previous reviewer gave jimmy-rigging directions. I would like to have the option and if that is what you REALLY want from a case, this is probably not what you should order. Also, the car-mount set-up is not so easy that I would take it up and down frequently. I left the straps in place and removed the case at first but the suspension strap annoyed my after a day of it getting in my way during frequent "Mama, help ..." requests from the back seat. I ended up taking the headreast to slide off one end of the strap without adjusting the strap so I can just rehang the loose end when I am ready to attach the dvd player again.
Over all, this is a compact yet durable case for a portable dvd player. I think it would protect my equipment well and was such an improvement over our previous setup. The car-mount is secure if with limited flexibitly. I felt the capacity was more than adequate for travel purposes and would probably work even better with a newer electronics which have less bulky accessories. If you are ok with the limitation of the car-mount options and the shoulder strap issue, this is a great case.
